Successful Bumble Bee Removal at Dunstable Site
We recently received a bumble bee removal enquiry from a company headquartered in Manchester, requesting assistance with a bumble bee infestation in a small portable accommodation cabin on their site in Dunstable. The bees were entering underneath the cabin, posing a potential risk to event staff using the accommodation. Our team was asked to investigate the situation and ensure the safety of the building while safely removing the bees.
Identification of the Bees
During our initial inspection, we confirmed the bees as bumble bees rather than honeybees. This distinction is crucial as the removal process varies significantly between the two species. Bumble bees require a specific approach to ensure their safe relocation and to minimise any disruption to their nesting behaviour.
Preparation and Safety Measures
On the morning, our team travelled to Dunstable and cordoned off the affected area. This precautionary measure was to ensure that no staff members were present in the vicinity during the removal process. Safety is paramount in our operations, and we always take the necessary steps to secure the area before beginning our work.
Lifting the Cabin and Locating the Nest
The cabin was carefully jacked up and secured, allowing us to safely access the area beneath it where the bees were entering. After lifting the cabin, we discovered that the bees were entering from one end, but the nest itself was situated in the middle of the cabin, approximately four or five feet from the entry point, the nest was built into the cabin insulation. This positioning is typical for white-tailed bumble bees.
Safe Bumble Bee Removal and Relocation of the Nest
To access the nest we opened the metal base of the cabin and located the bee nest nestled within the insulation. To ensure the nest remained intact during the relocation, we set up a special bee transport box directly underneath it. The nest, along with some insulation, was transferred into the bee box. By taking some of the insulation we were able to maintain the structure and environment of the nest, helping the bees to adapt to their new location more easily.
While waiting for the bumble bees to settle into the transport box, we sealed up the floor of the cabin to prevent any future infestations. Once the bees were settled, we closed the lid of the bee box and prepared for their relocation.
Rehoming the Bumble Bees
The bumble bees were safely rehomed in our director Matt O’Donnell’s garden, where they will continue to live for the next few weeks until the nest dies out naturally. This new location provides a safer environment for the bees, away from other activity, ensuring both the safety of the bees and the people around them.
