Common Signs of an Ant Infestation

  • Ant Trails: One of the most obvious signs of an infestation is the presence of ant trails. These lines of ants are usually seen near food sources or around cracks and crevices in your home.
  • Ant Nests: Some ants, like black garden ants, may build nests in the ground outside your property, while others can create nests inside walls, under floors or in other hidden areas.
  • Piles of dust, sand or other fine debris: when building nests, ants can cause piles of debris in or around buildings.
  • Increased Activity During Warmer Months: Ants are more active in the spring and summer, often seeking out food and water sources. If you notice increased ant activity, it’s a sign of a growing problem.
  • Swarms of Winged Ants: Swarming ants with wings, also known as “flying ants,” are a sign of a mature colony looking to expand. This can be particularly concerning as it indicates a well-established nest.

Main Types of Ants in the UK

At iX5 Pest Control, we handle a variety of ant species commonly found in the UK, some requiring specialised treatment methods to ensure effective removal:
  • Black or Garden Ant (Lasius niger): The most familiar ant species in the UK, known for its tendency to invade homes in search of food. Black garden ants typically nest under pavements, in soil or along lawn edges. Colonies can range from 4,000 to 15,000 workers. They are fast and resilient, using formic acid and their jaws for defence. They feed on insects, nectar, sugary substances and even dead ants from other colonies. We will treat Black Ant nests in or around properties (but not in gardens).
  • Pharoah Ants: these require specialist treatment as applying an incorrect insecticide product can aggravate the activity and cause satellite colonies to spread.
  • Argentine Ants: these require specialised treatment, as using the wrong insecticide can worsen the situation and lead to the spread of satellite colonies.
  • Yellow Meadow Ant (Lasius flavus): Often mistaken for red ants due to their yellow-orange colour, these ants build small mounds in lawns and are considered expert nest builders. Found in gardens, fields and meadows, they tend to stay underground, feeding on small insects and mites in their tunnels. Yellow meadow ants are usually only visible during nest disturbances or mating flights. We are unable to treat Yellow Meadow Ants in gardens.
  • Red Ant (Myrmica rubra): These deep red ants are common in the UK and can deliver a painful sting. Myrmica rubra typically live in small colonies of 100-300 members but are aggressive and more inclined to attack than flee. They are polygynous, meaning colonies can have multiple egg-laying queens. We are unable to assist with treating Red Ants.
  • Red Wood Ant / Horse Ant (Formica rufa): Known for building massive mounds from pine needles and woodland debris, red wood ants can form colonies of over 100,000 members. They are large and aggressive, attacking by biting and spraying formic acid. Formica sanguinea, the largest UK ant species, is known for raiding other ant colonies and stealing their brood to raise as their own. We are unable to assist with treating this species.
  • Black Wood Ant (Formica fusca): A less aggressive, black cousin of the red wood ant, this species is more timid and prefers nesting under rotting logs. Found mainly in Southern England, black wood ants have smaller populations, usually less than 1,000. They are polygynous but typically have fewer queens per colony. Despite their excellent eyesight, they tend to flee rather than fight. We are unable to treat these ants.
  • Black Stinging Ant (Tetramorium caespitum): A small, stinging black ant typically found along the coasts of Southern and Western England. Colonies can house up to 30,000 members, though an average nest has around 10,000 ants. This species is unique in its behaviour of burying its food in mounds of soil. We are unable to assist with treating these ants.
Each ant species that we can treat requires a tailored approach and at iX5 Pest Control, we have the expertise to advise correctly and assist.

Our Ant Pest Control Process

  1. Inspection: We start by conducting a thorough inspection of your property to identify the type of ants and locate their nests.
  2. Treatment Plan: Based on the findings, we create a bespoke treatment plan tailored to your situation (for those species of ants that we can assist with). This may include baiting, spraying or dusting with industry-leading products.
  3. Ant Elimination: Our professional treatments target the ants at their source, ensuring the entire colony is eradicated, including the queen.
  4. Prevention Advice: After treatment, our experts will offer advice on preventing future infestations, such as sealing entry points and maintaining good hygiene practices.
