Matt O'Donnell
What is your name and job title at iX5 Pest Control? Matt O’Donnell. I am the founder and company Director.
- How long have you been working in the pest control industry? I have worked in the pest control industry since 2017, although before this I had many years indirect involvement through my previous roles in local government.
- What does a typical day look like for you in your role? Every day is different in my role. I often spend time out on jobs but have to balance this with overseeing all other aspects of the business, such as marketing and business development, surveying and quoting, overseeing the accounts and cash flow, and all the other behind-the-scenes aspects of running a business.
- What do you enjoy most about working at iX5 Pest Control? The variety of work is great, and I really enjoy the challenge of running the business and helping resolve problems for our customers.
- What is the most challenging part of your job? The most challenging part of my job currently is balancing the time I spend out on jobs with all the other aspects of running the business.
- Which pest control service do you specialise in or enjoy the most? I enjoy all aspects of our work as it is rewarding solving pest problems for customers. I really do enjoy a good bedbug job though!
- What’s the strangest pest problem you’ve encountered? We see a whole range of different pest problems but one of the most challenging is dealing sensitively with people when we suspect delusional parasitosis / delusional infestation.
- Why did you choose a career in pest control? I started in pest control as I was looking for a business opportunity that would fit well with my background in Environmental Health.
- How do you ensure customers feel comfortable and informed during a pest treatment? Effective communication and empathy are essential when we are working with customers. We always make sure we give customers sufficient information on the particular pest problem they are encountering, and our treatment approach.
- What’s one tip you would give to homeowners to prevent pest issues? It is important to undertake regular checks around the outside of your property, and keep the external areas clean and tidy to reduce the risks of rodent activity. When staying away from home, always check the bed for bedbugs before sleeping in it!
- What’s your favourite pest-related fact? Bedbugs can remain dormant without a food source for up to 12 months and will then be attracted out of hiding when they detect a person has entered the room again!
- If you could choose to never encounter one pest again, which would it be and why? From a commercial perspective it might not be a great for business, but it would be good if we never had any more rat activity.
- What’s your favourite part of the day when you’re not working? I am a morning person so love getting up early and drinking coffee before the day starts for many.
- What’s your go-to snack or drink to keep you going on a busy day? Most definitely coffee! Especially in the morning! (not to mention cakes from Duston Village Bakery – Matt seemed to have missed these off!)
- If you could have any superpower to help with pest control, what would it be? It would really help to have X-ray vision to see behind walls and underground drainage!
- What’s your most memorable moment with a customer? I have lots of memorable moments with customers, but seeing the look of relief on their face once we have managed to resolve long term pest activity is always a lovely moment.
- What do you like to do in your free time? I enjoy walking, various water sports, cooking and eating out, travelling, and generally being active and outside.
- If you weren’t in pest control, what job would you have? I would probably still be working in local government as an Environmental Health Practitioner.
- What’s a fun fact most people don’t know about you? I enjoy trying different experiences, and over the years have been hot air ballooning, rally driving, piloted a hovercraft and tank driving, amongst others.
- If you could describe iX5 Pest Control in three words, what would they be? Trusted with Results! (that’s cheating Matt, whilst true it’s our strapline!).
Hayley
- What is your name and job title at iX5 Pest Control? Hayley. Receptionist and admin assistant.
- How long have you been working in the pest control industry? Since April 2025.
- What does a typical day look like for you in your role? Once I’ve dropped the children at school, I head into the office. The first thing I do (after I’ve had a cup of tea) is check emails from the day before and check for any voicemails. I finish at 3pm so quite often have things to pick up from the previous afternoon/evening. Throughout the day I answer the phone, help customers old and new with any questions they may have, follow up appointments we have attended and book new ones and deal with any other general enquiries that come through. In between, I arrange the paperwork for any training courses Matt is doing and also help with some pieces for the website.
- What do you enjoy most about working at iX5 Pest Control? No day is ever the same. I’ve enjoyed learning about pest control and can now confidently answer questions about most of the areas we cover.
- What is the most challenging part of your job? Leaving on time! The phone always rings as I’m about to leave.
- If you could choose to never encounter one pest again, which would it be and why? I’m terrified of spiders but sadly they don’t count as a pest because they do no harm! I haven’t encountered them, but I don’t think I could cope with bedbugs or fleas!
- What’s your favourite part of the day when you’re not working? Hard to choose! I love a quiet cup of coffee first thing in the morning before anyone else in the house gets up. But I also like a glass of wine after they’ve gone to bed!
- What’s your go-to snack or drink to keep you going on a busy day? It’s got to be tea and biscuits – preferably a chocolate hobnob.
- What do you like to do in your free time? Drink wine and go on holiday. (Obviously, don’t put this on the website! Whoops sorry, Hayley, too good not to post – don’t we all!) I like walking and spending time with my family and friends.
- If you weren’t in pest control, what job would you have? I would probably still be working in hospitality because I like the social aspect of it.
- What’s a fun fact most people don’t know about you? I played junior county golf many moons ago.
- If you could describe iX5 Pest Control in three words, what would they be? Friendly, reliable, and professional.
Matt Thorley
What is your name and job title at iX5 Pest Control? My name is Matt Thorley, and I am a pest control technician for iX5 pest control.
- What does a typical day look like for you in your role? A typical day for me is checking my jobs at the start of the day and making sure I’ve got all the correct kit I will need. I’ll then set off meeting customers to inspect either commercial, or domestic properties to assess their individual pest problems. I’ll then either give advice, or begin the job there and then if possible! Each customer will then recieve a report from me detailing my observations, treatment undertaken and any more advice or recommendations.
- What do you enjoy most about working at iX5 Pest Control? I enjoy working for iX5 as we are all positive minded team players, who strive to give our customers the best experience possible and leaving them with complete peace of mind. We also like to keep up to date with all the latest innovations in pest control, to make sure we are giving the best possible treatment to our customers.
- What is the most challenging part of your job? Sometimes we come across some unusual pest problems and I am always being surprised by some things I see, or don’t in some cases! These kinds of jobs require patience, and it’s often through monitoring and trying different techniques we start to see the desired results.
- What’s one tip you would give to homeowners to prevent pest issues? Good housekeeping can prevent a lot of pest related issues! Storing food and waste properly is vital to not draw pest activity to properties. Also not letting materials build up in areas is important to prevent pest activity going unnoticed.
- What’s your favourite pest-related fact? Rats have a pack hierarchy much like lions, meaning the alpha male will feed first before the subdominants and juveniles! The alpha also dictates how the pack behave and will often fight other competitors to remain the alpha.
- If you could choose to never encounter one pest again, which would it be and why? Fleas are one of my least favourite pests to treat – I often come away from jobs feeling itchy even though I know I haven’t got any on me!
- What’s your go-to snack or drink to keep you going on a busy day? I don’t know what I’d do without my morning coffee!
- If you could have any superpower to help with pest control, what would it be? X-ray vision without a doubt. Sometimes it’s impossible to see what damage pests have done in cavities and below ground.

- What’s one tip you would give to homeowners to prevent pest issues? Be vigilant, the smallest crack can allow rodents into your home. Make sure waste is kept in a sealed container and clean up spills to avois attracting insects.
