How to Check for Bedbugs
Whether at home, visiting a hotel, or using an Airbnb, there may be times when you want to check for bedbugs.
In this video, Matt O’Donnell talks us through how to check for bedbugs.
If you’re unable to listen to the video, here’s what Matt has to say:
“Bedbugs are far more common than people realise. They are often picked up when staying in hotels, Airbnbs, or other overnight accommodation. Another common source of bedbugs is second-hand furniture.
Here are some quick checks you can do on the mattress or bed you’ll be sleeping in to see if there are any bedbugs.
A very quick check when staying away is to start at the head of the bed, lift up the bedsheets, and expose the mattress. Mattresses often have seams around them where bedbugs tend to hide. These are the areas you should focus on. Even if you don’t see bedbugs, you may notice black or brown spotting, which is bedbug faecal material, in or around the seams. If there are no signs of spotting or bedbugs, that’s a good indication the bed is clear.
Once you’ve checked in and around the seams, lift the mattress slightly, inspect the bottom corners, and check the seam underneath. If you still don’t see any signs, examine the base of the bed. Whether it’s a slatted or divan base, check any small cracks and crevices, as these are the places bedbugs love to hide.
The final place to check, if accessible, is around and behind the headboard.”
The key signs to look out for are:
- Actual bedbugs – Bedbugs go through various life stages, and their eggs are visible to the naked eye. The eggs are very small and white.
- Brown or black spotting, which is bedbug faecal matter.
