In this blog article, we recount a recent mouse infestation in a large detached house and how our team successfully resolved the problem.
The Call for Help
One afternoon, we received a call from a concerned homeowner in a village just outside of Northampton who had noticed signs of mouse activity in several areas of her property, including the utility room, bathroom, airing cupboard, and loft. Understanding the urgency of the situation, Matt, one of our experienced pest control specialists, attended the property that same evening to conduct a detailed inspection.
Identifying the Pest Problem
Upon arrival, Matt carried out a comprehensive survey of the affected areas inside the house. His investigation revealed that the mice were using the heating pipework to travel between rooms, allowing them to move freely throughout the property. Knowing that locating the primary entry point was crucial to resolving the issue, Matt proceeded to inspect the exterior of the home.
The house was in generally good structural condition, with no obvious entry points. Although there were a couple of air bricks—a common access point for mice—Matt concluded they were unlikely to be the source due to their location.
Finding the Entry Point
Just as Matt was completing his external survey, he noticed two utility meter cabinets on the side wall of the house. One of these cabinets had a transparent plastic panel, through which he spotted a small pile of chewed Sycamore seeds—a telltale sign of mice activity. Mice are known to collect and store Sycamore seeds as a food source, making this area a likely entry point.
When he opened the utility meter box, Matt confirmed his suspicions. He found a hole leading into the cavity wall where cables passed through from the meter into the house. Further inspection revealed smear marks around this hole, clear evidence that mice had been using it as an entry route into the home.

Implementing the Pest Solution
With the source of the infestation identified, Matt took immediate action:
- Trap Placement: He strategically placed traps in the affected indoor areas to capture the mice.
- Temporary Proofing: To prevent further entry, Matt conducted temporary proofing on the exterior of the property. This measure was designed to block immediate access until a permanent solution could be put in place.
- Follow-Up Plan: A follow-up visit was scheduled within a couple of days to check the traps, assess the results, and implement any additional proofing required.
